Parliament has referred the MP for Assin Central, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong to the Privileges Committee over reports that he threatened to beat a journalist, Erastus Asare Donkor.
The Speaker of Parliament who announced this noted his surprise over the matter and said the Privileges Committee will determine whether or not the Member of Parliament was contemptuous of the House and accordingly prescribe sanctions.
“This is my first time hearing this matter. As it is now, I am compelled to refer to the Privileges Committee. It is a matter the Privileges Committee will have to go into and report to the House and it is for the House to decide whether the honorable Member is contentious of the House,” Speaker Bagbin noted.
The Multimedia Group submitted a formal complaint with the Police over claims that the MP had called for the journalist to be beaten. He is reported to have said during a broadcast on Net 2, a television station he owns that if he were the President, he would have called for Erastus to be beaten mercilessly.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin has questioned if there is prima facie evidence for the Speaker’s decision to refer Hon. Agyapong to the Privileges Committee.
He told the floor, “All I am saying is that, if care is not taken, we may end up sacrificing the rule of procedure which will amount to we creating a new path that if we are supposed to go back to it… will be a problem,” he explained on the floor.
